Background:
The study was commissioned and published in cooperation with the California Fashion Association and the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). The last time a study was done on this industry and magnitude was year 2000. Media interested in interviews and study should call for an advanced copy or link to the .pdf file on the website.
The study by LAEDC Vice President and Chief Economist Jack Kyser and Economist George Huang examined the pluses and minuses of the fashion industry, and found that the outlook for the Los Angeles apparel/textiles industry would appear to be bleak. Much of it due to the proliferation of low cost sources of production in Asia, and the lifting of apparel import quotas in 2005.
“There is a tremendous interest in ‘L.A. Style,’ and access to the local ports and LAX. The design talent coming out of L.A.'s schools is one of the greatest assets of the area's fashion industry," said Chief Economist Jack Kyser. [Contact: Wally Baker, LAEDC 213.447.2269 or 213.236.4812]
